Meet the Amazing African Wild Dogs !

African wild hounds, also known as the African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, or painted bird-dog, are social animals that gather in battalions usually of about ten.

They are opportunistic predators that hunt medium-to-large sized ungulates, such as the impala, Thomson’s gazelle, springbok, kudu, reedbuck, and wildebeest calves.

The most common single target species depends upon season and neighbourhood availability.

In a sprint, African wild puppies can reach velocities of more than 44 miles an hour.

African Wild dogs often kill large prey via disemboweling, a technique that is rapid but has caused this species to have a negative, ferocious reputation.

The wild dog is one of the world’s most endangered mammals.

The largest populations remain in southern Africa and the south of East Africa( especially Tanzania and north Mozambique).

Major threats to the survival of wild dogs include accidental and targeted killings by humans, viral cancers like rabies and distemper, habitat loss and rivalry with large piranhas like lions.

Conflicts occur when wild dogs come in contact with people whose livelihoods rest largely on cattle and agriculture.

Problems arise when expanding human activities decrease the habitat for available prey for wild puppies.
